Combine youth, resource responsibility, and competition to activate greatest interest in a sustainable future. Empower next generations and clean energy workforces. Stimulate growth through corporate sponsorship and entrepreneurial spirit. Showcase design and technologies that teach us how to live responsibly. Establish your city as a leader in energy transition. Make a difference.

The Energy Endeavour Foundation looks forward to inspirational applications from potential host cities for the next edition of the ultimate international university level Competition for resource efficient architecture and engineering. The Solar Decathlon Europe (SDE) is student- driven, multi-disciplinary and workforce-oriented. With continued emphasis on innovation, science and technology, the upcoming SDE23 Competition will continue to raise energy literacy through this inspirational public event in responsible living.

Initiated in 2002 by the United States Department of Energy, the Solar Decathlon focuses on 10 contests, in which Teams compete in the design, construction and management of full scale, individual, solar-powered dwellings. These are assembled on a ‘solar village’ site in approximately ten days, creating an open forum and exhibition, where the buildings are operated, demonstrated to the public, and evaluated by a jury of renowned international adjudicators. A worldwide movement, Solar Decathlon chapters take place in the U.S., Europe, China, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and India.

Thousands of Decathletes majoring in architecture, engineering, communication, finance, environmental science, and renewable energy management are learning by building, becoming our ambassadors for energy literacy and behavioural change.

The designated SDE23 Host City will promote the educational, economic, and energy-security benefits of renewable energy, and resource responsibility by demonstrating technologies that can effectively be deployed in our fast-growing communities. SDE villages become public forums and living labs, educating wide audiences through accessible, affordable innovations and technologies, all contributing to responsible habitation. This singular learning-by-building experience galvanises workforce development, inspiring students toward careers in sectors that include design, architecture, engineering, communication, finance, and renewable energy management.

The SDE Competition and exhibition venues connect people through activities that are plentiful, varied, and engaging: technical demonstrations, conferences, cultural activities, and partner stands are integral parts of any SDE solar village. The SDE Host City is promoted as a capital of sustainability for citizens and visitors from all over the world. Public house tours are provided by Decathletes themselves, for first-hand experiences on the comfort and savings in homes that combine energy-efficient construction, home systems, appliances, and innovative design with onsite renewable energy production.
